Air Pollution Campaign - April 2016

Air pollution is going to be our second main campaign along with food. National Friends of the Earth has not sent much information to us so far as they are still in the planning stage. A number of people, including Shaun and Beatrice have signed up for more details when they become available. If you'd like to tell national Friends of the Earth about your views on air pollution then follow the link here.

In the meantime, we are going to run a couple of very small air pollution related campaigns:

Tesla
The Master Cutler is promoting Sheffield to Tesla (maker of electric cars) as they are on the look out for a European manufacturing base. See more here. As clean vehicles are an important part of our campaign for clean air, Shaun is to draft a letter supporting the proposal and inviting the Master Cutler to one of our meetings. We hope we can work together to promote green jobs and clean technology.

Dirty Vehicles
There is a website to report dirty buses and lorries. We want to publicise this via our website, Facebook and other channels, Shaun and Beatrice to take the lead on this as it would be a very easy action to spend a few hours in the city centre monitoring buses.

If you have seen any significantly polluting buses or lorries (HGV) you can take action by reporting them to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) on 0870 6040440 or https://www.gov.uk/report-smoky-vehicle

You'll need the following information:

  1. Vehicle registration
  2. Vehicle description - make, model, colour
  3. Company name (if visible)
  4. Road name or number
  5. Date and time when you saw the vehicle

Please note: It is perfectly normal for diesel engines to emit a little smoke when starting from cold and when accelerating. Please only report vehicles that are producing excessive amounts of smoke continuously.
