Plastics Campaign Update - November 2018
Drew gave an update about the screening of the film A Plastic Ocean. We hope to join forces with the Light Cinema and the Festival of Debate for spring 2019. Simon confirmed that national FoE should be able to provide an appropriate speaker who could re-iterate the FoE environmental line on plastics.
Richard participated in a national teleconference which discussed contacting supportive MPs and subsequently contacted Louise Hague but has not yet had a reply. He has requested a meeting and offered a photo opportunity.

Campaign Update - August 2018
Fracking
Air Pollution
- Richard provided an update. The Marsh Lane application was approved largely on grounds of putative energy needs.
- Sheffield Climate Alliance are continuing to meet regularly with councillor Jack Scott.
- A training workshop for councillors, with the Council’s Chief Planning Officer and two independent experts, is likely to be 26 or 27 September. It will look at the issues of waste fracking water at Ecclesfield.
- Alan and Richard visited the Mission Springs and Tinker Lane protection camps.
- Detailed information on recent anti-fracking news and plans available from Sheffield Against Fracking website and newsletter.
- The Deep in Hull apparently don’t want groups for their beach clean activity so we have dropped this as a social event.
- We were contacted by the Brownies to see if we could do a talk about plastics. Richard will follow this up and offer to do a talk.
- Our main campaign focus at the minute is the opportunity for organising a local film screening of “A Plastic Ocean” with a panel discussion afterwards. Shaun has identified a number of options that he and Bert will follow up in terms of collaborative showings: We have the opportunity to screen “Blue Heart” about damming rivers but we feel it will be difficult to build up an audience.
- We are aware of national Friends of the Earth's Freedom of Information request to the council to obtain a copy of the feasibility study for Nitrogen Dioxide Compliance (required by DEFRA by 31 March 2018, under the Environment Act 1995, Air Quality Direction 2017) which identifies options for compliance with legal limits for Nitrogen Dioxide. The council haven't provided this as the document is still in draft. Friends of the Earth are working on this and we will help if we can.

Films - August 2017
The Al Gore film "An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power" was discussed. Felt to be reasonably informative and had a “get involved” message suggesting action to "learn about it" and "go to renewables". However, it was not felt to be as good as the original."
Our stall at The Light cinema provided a focal point for discussions. Laura had provided links to the Greenpeace film festival films – some have potential for showing in our own future film festivals, along with “The Bentley Effect” which was agreed to be worth showing.

Stalls & Films Update - July 2017
Frack Free Penistone had asked about sharing a stall in Penistone but we had not planned one and so could not offer this.
We are hoping to run a stall (if the cinema will allow one) for the new Al Gore film being screen at the new cinema on the Moor. If you want to book a ticket then see the link below. If you want to help out on a possible stall then get in touch.

Future Events - December 2016
There are likely to be opportunities to organise “Festival of Debate” events again next year; ideas include films and also other events e.g. a meal in collaboration with the Real Junk Food Project as part of the Food Campaign or an Air Pollution event.
There are a couple of opportunities to use other local events to hand out leaflets and promote the Food Campaign: the Sheffield Food festival 27-29 May and a celebrity chef (Gino d’Acampo) at City Hall on 2 May.

Film Festival Update - July 2016
If we join in with the Festival of Debate then we can only screen one film and the deadline is at the end of July. We believe that Cowspiracy would be a good film even though it has been shown once before in Sheffield.
We are looking at Regather, Union Street, Montgomery Street, Hagglers Corner, Victoria Hall, Tapestry Room etc for a venue.
Breaking news: We have agreed to screen Cowspiracy at Regather as part of the Festival of Debate. It will take place on Thursday 17 November. More details will be provided next month.

Other News - June 2016
June Meeting
Our monthly meeting for June was shorter than normal meeting with fewer people attending. This might have something to do with holidays and an England football match.
Facebook Update
Our Facebook page now has 125 people liking it. There has been a gradual increase over time with peaks coinciding with the Barclays’ fracking demonstration and our food adverts.
Stalls
We had to cancel the stall at Sharrow as we did not have anyone to run it. We’ve decided to go to Stannington on 9th July, but we need to know as soon as possible if we have enough people to run the stall.
Film Festival
We would like to organise another film festival later this year, so Shaun agreed to contact the Festival of Debate to see if with can join forces with them in October. People suggested films about food and air pollution. If you know of some good films then please let John know.
Waste strategy
There is an opportunity to comment on the South Yorkshire Waste Strategy for 2016-2021. See link here. The closing date for comments is 31 July 2016.
Talks and Outings
Shaun tried to contact the Master Cutler with a view to talking about electric cars. It looks like there were problems with the email invitation we sent so this hasn’t happened.
We also suggested organising a trip to ITM power to look at their clean electricity to hydrogen systems. Beatrice is going to organise this.
Shaun mentioned that it would be a good social outing to clean a beach with the Marine Conservation Society between September 16-19 near Hull. We could clean the beach for a few hours and have a trip out to the seaside. See link here. Does anyone fancy this?

Stalls & Film Festival Update - May 2016
Stalls
Richard still has the gazebo and needs somewhere else to store it. David suggested a waterproof bag so that it can be stored safely in his back garden. Francois is looking to see if he can store it in his outhouse.
The Wortley Hall stall had to be cancelled due to car problems and the gazebo. The cow costume is being held by Jenny Carpenter which Francois will collect.
We need the dates of up and coming stalls and events so that we can plan. These are published on our website but we actually need to write them down in our diaries. If you have a Google calendar then you can view it along side your normal diary by selecting Other Calendars > Add a friend's calendar and then pasting the address: itvjlgivba7ikss478s66r31to@group.calendar.google.com
Film Festival
The second part of Festival of Debate starts in September so we need to contact them to organise a slot. Also can we put forward ideas for films so that we can discuss which ones for the next meeting? Can we make sure that the dates don’t clash with the workshop for TTIP?

Ditch Coal Film & Talk
Our main speaker is Vladimir from Ecodefense, a radical Russian group raising awareness of the plight of indigenous shor and Teleut people living in the Russian coalfields that supply coal to the UK. The Ditch Coal Roadshow will take you back to coal's point of extraction - focussing on the mines in the UK and Russia - and follow it to the UK's coal fired power stations.
The Coal Action Network's own speaker will look at the situation in the UK's opencast mines and power stations and open the discussion about what we can do about the industry.
Come along to find out more and to discuss how you can get involved in ending coal's journey of destruction.

Film Festival 2016
We would like to run another film festival in 2016. We believe the Festival of Debate will be running events during March-May and September-November in 2016. We'd be keen to work with them following last year's successful event.
During May there are many food related events such as the Sheffield Food Festival and Meat Free May. The Festival of Debate should also be running in May so we could try linking all three events together to create a mini food film festival. The idea would be based on showing 3 short 10 minute films at regular intervals during the day. People could pop in watch a film and grab a drink and a bite to eat.
We believe that Sheffield Climate Alliance are showing Cowspiracy in the near future. Also CND are looking for ideas and links for a film festival.

Festival of Debate & Film Festival
We were notified by the organisers of the Festival of Debate that they are thinking of running the event again in early 2016. Last year we found this to be a hugely successful way of screening our film festival to a different audience. If they manage to pull it off next year then we'll try to organise another film festival. If you know of any good eco films to show which aren't too expensive to license then please let us know.
John is still looking for a child-friendly film to show. If you have any ideas then please let us know.

Campaigning News in Brief - July 2015
TTIP
Unfortunately François was not present so there was no update. This matter was adjourned to the next meeting. John thanked Francois for all his hard work on this issue.
Green Commission
There was no information on this subject as Beatrice was at the Green Commission SHED talks which clashed with our meeting.
Child Friendly Green Film
John had not been able to find any family friendly environmental films. Richard suggested The Lorax, which is based on a Dr Seuss book. There might be some good Disney or Dogwoof films. All suggestions will be gratefully received. Walkley would be a good venue for the next festival.
HS2
Paris Climate Meeting
On Sunday 29 November, the biggest climate protest ever will be taking place in London on the eve of the crucial Paris climate talks, which will take place from the 30th November to the 12th December.
We hope to take part in the march and work with Sheffield Climate Alliance to promote the event.
We also hope to have a stall at the Climiate Alliance national conference in Sheffield on 19 September.

It was felt that Sheffield FoE should have an agreed position on HS2, as the subject was broached by anti-HS2 campaigners at the Beighton stall. Opinions in the group are mixed but we will try to get national FoE's views on this campaign.

On Sunday 29 November, the biggest climate protest ever will be taking place in London on the eve of the crucial Paris climate talks, which will take place from the 30th November to the 12th December.
Around the world, in major cities, people will be coming together to demand that our governments take action to save our beautiful planet. Across the UK, people will be working together to make this the biggest, most poignant demonstration yet, and our unified voice will resonate across the globe to call for a serious change in policy attitudes towards the climate.
Time to Act will be working alongside a variety of other groups and activists for mass mobilisation to really show solidarity with our French neighbours.
We hope to take part in the march and work with Sheffield Climate Alliance to promote the event.
We also hope to have a stall at the Climiate Alliance national conference in Sheffield on 19 September.
Finances
Liddy has received £100 from FoE. Can be spent on flagpoles and a printer cartridge if Kiran has not already spent this amount on other FoE items.

Film Festival & Festival of Debate
We linked up with the Festival of Debate to screen a couple of environmental documentaries.
The first film, screened on Wednesday 4th March, was the climate change documentary Chasing Ice. There was a good turnout of over 40 people, many of which had not previously attended our film festivals. There was a good discussion afterwards led by Simon Bowens from Friends of the Earth's Leeds office. Thank you Simon for coming along and helping out so well. The Union Street building was an excellent venue - it had plenty of space for the screening, a stall and space to sell cake and refreshments.
The second instalment was the film Gaslands 2 on Wednesday 18th March. This too was very well attended with many people we haven't seen before. David Burley from Frack Free South Yorkshire lead the discussion after the film.
While John and Hayley were running the stall, they chatted to the manager of Lush and will investigate ways of working together. Our stall was used to publicise our work on fracking and the Run on Sun campaign.
Sheffield Friends of the Earth would also like to thank Felicity Hoy of Union Street for helping us with this film festival.
We are hoping to show a family friendly film next, possibly during the day, targeted at young people and families. Any ideas for films please let us know.

Festival of Debate
The Festival of Debate will take place in Sheffield in the run up to the next general election - with a series of panel discussions, debates, Q&As, artistic responses and keynote speaker events across March and April 2015. The festival aims to create a meaningful dialogue around key social, political and economic issues.
Sheffield Friends of the Earth is pleased to be taking part in the festival by screening Chasing Ice on Wednesday 4th March and Gasland 2 on Wednesday 18 March. Doors open at 6pm at the Union Street building, Union Street, Sheffield, S1 2JP. See Map. Please note that we cannot offer disabled access as the lift is not working at the moment. There is a flight of stairs to climb.
Friends of the Earth Regional Campaigner, Simon Bowens, will host the discussion after the screening of Chasing Ice. David Burley from Frack Free South Yorkshire will lead the discussion after Gasland 2.
A range of hot drinks and cakes will be available for a small fee.
See www.festivalofdebate.com for more details and to book free tickets.
The Festival of Debate features several other environmental discussions you might be interested in attending. See the website for more details.

Festival of Debate Planning Meeting
The venue at Union Street was visited and looks good. There is no disabled access as the lift is currently broken and will not be fixed in time. We will be setting up at 5pm on both days to make sure everything is ready for the 6pm opening time. We need curtains and/or banners to block out the light from the windows.
There are catering facilities; Liddy is to provide milk, tea, coffee, sugar. Richard will bring soya milk. Beatrice, Trisha, Maeve and Hayley are to provide a cake each. Hayley will provide a laptop and Richard the speakers. Union Street will provide the projector.
Speakers: David Burley from Frack Free South Yorkshire is to lead the discussion on Gaslands 2, and Simon Bowens from Friends of the Earth on Chasing Ice. We have a licence for Gaslands 2 but the people promoting Chasing Ice have not replied to the request for a licence.

Film Festival 2015
It was suggested that we team up with Felicity Hoy of Common People and the Festival of Debate. This will run from March to April 30th. We could show films on 4th April and 18th April with speakers afterwards to lead the discussion. It was suggested that we use Gaslands II and Chasing the Ice again as we are looking at a completely different audience. It will also help our organising as there is not much time to buy films and obtain the licenses. Beatrice will get the licenses. There will be a sub group set up to help organise the film festival comprising of Shaun, Maeve, Richard, Kiran, John and Hayley meeting on 9th February, 7pm Red Deer. It was also suggested that we look into getting an academic to facilitate the discussion; Beatrice to look into this

Film Festival 2015
The venue at Walkley was discussed for a possible place to hold our film festival. It was suggested that we show the films here on four consecutive Saturdays. This would make them more family friendly; make it so that people can come more relaxed rather than rushing after work and not having much tea. We could aim for the four weeks in March, although there may be a clash with the Climate March. We need to look into this date and other clashes. It was pointed out that although many will be going on the march not everyone will. It could be that we could show a relevant film on that date showing our support for what is happening.
There is also a new cinema opening up which could be a good place to hold it. See the article form the Star here. Could people look into what films they would like and where we could hold the film festival?

Film Festival
We are planning to screen another film festival in early 2015 (probably around March). The format will be similar to previous years, but we'd like to add a family friendly film on a Saturday to encourage younger people. John will investigate suitable films for children.
If you have any ideas about good films to screen then please let us know. Shaun mentioned a film called Racing Extinction which is due out in 2015. Francois mentioned Midway Island as a possible film about birds eating plastic.
To fund the event we still have a small amount of money left from the original co-op grant for last year's film festival. Our 40th birthday do generated a small profit so we'll contribute that towards the film festival. Kiran will also receive £100 from national Friends of the Earth to run her first campaign as part of her training.
Kiran mentioned that she has a lot of green films at the University of Sheffield's student union. This means we'd only have to buy the licences and not the actual DVD. See link for a list of films.
It was suggested that we could use either Walkley Community Centre or the United Reformed Church as they both have good facilities for films and making drinks.
The film festival will be on the agenda at the next meeting.
If you have any ideas about good films to screen then please let us know. Shaun mentioned a film called Racing Extinction which is due out in 2015. Francois mentioned Midway Island as a possible film about birds eating plastic.
